WL SCHOOL BOARD’S NEW STARTING POINT IN DEBATE OVER TRANSFER STUDENTS
Monday evening could be a key moment in a simmering debate on the West Lafayette school board over what to do about transfer students – whether to continue to accept them and, if so, how – after a state law passed in 2025 undercut a system the district has in place.
The school board is scheduled to meet in a work session to hammer out details in a proposed policy – released in draft form late this week – that could offer slots, figured out by a lottery, to more families looking for a place in West Side classrooms, ranked academically among the best in the state.
A final vote on a policy is scheduled for March 9.
Catching up, here’s what’s in play: The West Lafayette school board has been in a holding pattern on the student transfer policy since last summer, after a new state law stripped school districts’ ability to charge the additional costs of the district’s property tax referendum to families of transfer students who live and pay taxes somewhere else.
