Earlier this week, it was restaurant recommendations. Let’s get specific: What’s your go-to place for pizza in Greater Lafayette?
Earlier this week, I tossed out a prompt asking: What Greater Lafayette restaurant was your go-to in 2022? And why would you recommend it? The results were a great reminder of the places we have – and a good primer at my house on new-to-us places we needed to try. We’re on it in 2023.
Along the way, someone suggested it was time to get specific: “I'd like to see you start an argument over ‘best pizza’ in Greater Lafayette.” I can get on board with that. So …
Today’s prompt: What’s your go-to place for pizza in Greater Lafayette? What do you get when you’re there? And what makes it your favorite?
As always, be cool to each other when responding. And thanks for reading and supporting the Based in Lafayette reporting project. If you’re new around here and thinking about subscribing, here’s a way to jump aboard.
I’m going for Arni’s at Market Square..why you say? First of all the food is always good and because I was just there last evening with 12 of our out of town family members enjoying the tradition when Brad Cohen comes by our table and greeted us all.
THAT’s why.
The owner walks around and makes the customers feel special.
Growing up in Greater Lafayette, it's always been Bruno's and Arni's. Now Snugg's Pizza is giving them both a run for their money. The wood-fired oven especially during good weather is the bomb, and I love that they offer vegan options.
Thanks for listening to your readers. I already weighed in on this topic in the previous restaurant piece, but seeing this in my inbox made me chuckle. Thanks again for this great service to our community.
I use this blog to stay caught up on Lafayette Goings on now that I've moved away.
Bruno's will always have a spot in my heart as I grew up there after Football games. Orlando always had time to have a quick chat with the family, and the food was always high quality. Hard to describe but like the soft dough cheese and sauce ratios that I have not found elsewhere. I hope they open indoor dining again soon.
Has anyone tried Parkway Pizza and Subs on Sagamore across from the BMI dealership? I've recently purchased several pizza from them--I do thin crust but have also purchased hand tossed for the family that insisted. Prior to that I liked Monical's but the price went crazy. Parkway is usually great, but sometimes inconsistent. It's a small shop, might have to do with who is cooking. I still recommend.
Pizza Uncommon quickly climbed my favorite-pizza list. I’m not vegan, but their vegan offerings are outstanding, and the crust is superior to anything else on either side of the River. Also, and it sounds silly, but the ability to order online for ease of pick-up makes the whole experience that much better, too. 5 stars!
This is where Greater Lafayette turns on me. Any place that chops up it's pepperoni and other meats and puts it on their pizza gets 1 star out of 5. I won't meet you there. Crumbles are a sin. For dine-in, Teays has THE superior pizza; 5 stars out of 5, and 6 stars out of 5 when they have prosciutto pizza. Ask for "well done!" Black Sparrow earns 4.5 stars out of 5, but only because they bring a pie too large for one person. A good problem to have. For delivery, Jet's is the only choice. Also, deep dish pizza isn't pizza. It's bread loaf with hot toppings. Did anyone buy the wood fire oven at Sylvia's? I have spoken.
Monicals is good, but if I’m ordering for my family, it’s Little Caesars or Mad Mushroom. The cost for those 2 places really can’t be beat. Especially LC.
We tried the GF pizza at Uncommon Pizza last night on the previous Restaurant Recommendations for 2023. The pizza was really, really good. Best GF crust around! Thanks for all the suggestions!
Bruno’s. Best pizza. You always know it is going to be good. I have never gotten a bad pizza from Bruno’s. Just sorry it is only carry out. It was good atmosphere when it was open for sit down.
Arni's, Monical's, and Snuggs for me, and only a particular pizza at each (thin crust, extra cheese, one meat...) "Best" is so totally relative to each person's individual tastes.
We loved the Veggie Supreme (hold the top cheese) at the you-bake-at-home Papa Murphy’s on the Westside. Alas, it is gone. Monicle’s Pizza (ham and sausage, well done) is also a favorite.
If you are from PA then you know Foxs Pizza Den pizza. They have pizzas of all sizes but known for a large 52 slice 30 inch party pizza. Great place for a wedgie too. Try it out. Located in front of Meijer on the east side.
My pizza, I made a couple from scratch last night. I had my first midnight-snack in a long time and finished off a slice at 1 a.m. I used the last of my home-grown garlic on this one.
Bruno's otherwise in a pinch, Arnie's if the "kids" want a taste of childhood nostalgia.
Your turn: The best pizza in town
I’m going for Arni’s at Market Square..why you say? First of all the food is always good and because I was just there last evening with 12 of our out of town family members enjoying the tradition when Brad Cohen comes by our table and greeted us all.

Just like his dad Arni did!
Class act!!
Growing up in Greater Lafayette, it's always been Bruno's and Arni's. Now Snugg's Pizza is giving them both a run for their money. The wood-fired oven especially during good weather is the bomb, and I love that they offer vegan options.
A lot of good recommendations so far!
I'll give my vote to The Pickle, they deserve more attention.
BBQ Chicken Ranch and Hawaiian are our go-to's.
Reasoning: It's tasty, close by, and anchors a neighborhood that could use some more love.
Buy local!
Miss Sylvia's Brick Oven terribly.
Black Sparrow - always tasty interesting special
Bruno's - great cheese, miss the sit down experience
Arni's - always reliable, good, thin crust, wish they'd lose the Covid traffic plan at Market Square
Have to drive all the way to Champaign to get decent deep dish - Papa Del's Pizza Factory on Neil St.
Pizza Uncommon and Cafe Literato on the West Side. Black Sparrow does nice single pizzas and their crust is great.
Pizza Uncommon
Snuggs pizza. All pizzas are good but the corn, chorizo and cilantro and a squeeze of lime is the best imo.
Thanks for listening to your readers. I already weighed in on this topic in the previous restaurant piece, but seeing this in my inbox made me chuckle. Thanks again for this great service to our community.
For dine-in: Arni's veggie pizza (love the train!)
For personal sized: Cafe Literato or Black Sparrow
For carry-out: The Pickle
I have to salute Mad Mushroom for supporting local causes (like the elementary school where I work). Good pizza and sandwiches, too.
Another vote for Pizza Uncommon. Best crust in town. And don't sleep on the wings. Big, breaded, and covered in sauce. Well worth the price.

Top 4
Azzip
Brunos
Jets
Arnis
I am still digging Azzip Pizza. I love the sauce and topping choices and the crust. I can’t pass it by when looking for a place for lunch.

Snugg's Pizza tops my list, especially all of their delicious and creative veggie options!
No one bought the oven...but snuggs has a wood fired oven and craft pizza you can’t stop eating 🤠
It's been a while, but Buck Creek Pizza is very good. Their Supreme Pizza is dee-lish!
Without a doubt, Brunos! Homemade crust is great. Have been eating their pizza for over 50 years and there is nothing like it.
Arni's....forever and ever amwn
I like Greek's Pizza in WL.

Is the Spot tavern Smokey?

All the best pizza places are up in Northern Indiana. Local places can't touch the quality.
Having grown up in Watseka, I still love Monicals Pizza. RIP, Ralph.

Oh, Black Sparrow does it quite well too.
(I miss Sylvia's too.)
Jet’s. No contest. Closest you’re going to come to getting real Detroit style pizza in Lafayette.
Arni's. I miss Papa Buds
We loved the Veggie Supreme (hold the top cheese) at the you-bake-at-home Papa Murphy’s on the Westside. Alas, it is gone. Monicle’s Pizza (ham and sausage, well done) is also a favorite.
Arni’s, Magoos, and Black Sparrow.
I’ll second someone who said they miss Sylvia’s pizza! I loved it. I also miss really the Jefferson Square Pizza King.

My wife’s favorite is Monica’s
