This is in no way a comment on Dave’s reporting, but after reading through the various stories and considering legislation etc., I’m feeling like that motto of “Hoosier Hospitality” is a thing of the past.

The “Kissing Tree” definitely needs to come down. It’s too bad because it is a cool landmark. Maybe there is an opportunity to generate some revenue for a worthy cause. Donate the wood to a craftsman and create something that can be auctioned off.

I agree that since it is coming down, the wood should be used for something instead of mulch. Maybe some city benches?

I still haven't heard all of the reasons as to why it is a safety concern now and not in 2025, or 2024, or 2023, or 2022. And what other options have been explored. The City is very quick to remove trees throughout the community, many times without notice, documentation, or debate about the merits of their assessment.

“Unfortunately, we have tried for years and years to keep it in its incredible shape where it is, but between the landowner and the city, we’ve determined that for safety reasons, it will need to come down,” West Lafayette Mayor Erin Easter said.

I get why Brown agree to keep Ortiz off the ballot as a Republican, he had run previously as a libertarian and while those parties are generally close in alignment, they do have key differences. And I mostly agree with Browns opinion, even though Ortiz had voted in the last several Republican primaries.

I also understand why Daubenmeir wanted to keep Smith-Margraf off the ballot, however I disagree with his reasoning. Plenty of Republicans didn’t support Braun, specifically because of Beckwith being forced on the ticket. Add in that a former Republican was running against him, it’s not shocking some/many republicans choose to support McCormick. Personally as a Republican, I was on edge with Braun in the first place and then when Beckwith, a just generally terrible guy (and that was before his troubles with AI porn and a child porn scandal at his church was uncovered), was put on the ticket; I couldn’t support Bruan any longer. Now that didn’t result in a vote for McCormick, but I get why many choose to do that. Republicans and Democrats need to try and understand why, solid members of their party vote against their candidates rather than trying to punish them.
