Justices rule six ballots shouldn’t have been thrown out by Indiana Recount Commission, reversing results – again – in favor of Sen. Spencer Deery over challenger Paula Copenhaver in May GOP primary.
PRAISE BE TO GOD. There is justice. This is the time for all good men and women from the either party to fight for the Republic, for Justice, for Democracy. Thank you Sen. Deery for your courage to stand up to the demonic Trump. I'm a Democrat and I love a good patriot. Thank you Sen. Deery and thank you to the Indiana Supreme Court for standing up for the voters of Indiana.
“Copenhaver said her recount challenge was about following the rules and that Deery’s arguments were “playing on fears and emotions.””
Their whole argument was based on the thought that these were fraudulent votes. How is the accusing people of fraudulent voting not an argument on emotion.
I guess we have different definitions of integrity. I spent Primary Election Day chatting cordially with Spencer Deery and deplore the ongoing personal attacks on him. Nevertheless, it must be recognized that he ran 100s of thousands of dollars of defamatory ads paid for by dark money that he knew lied about Paula Copenhaver. He also unsuccessfully attempted to get a vote for Copenhaver invalidated on grounds unanimously rejected by the Recount Commission; he was in it to win not to protect voters' rights. I do not dispute the decision of the Supreme Court, but Deery was not there to establish a principle but to win an election. Standing up to Trump on one matter is fine but the upcoming election is about more than one past decision that does not, in fact, distinguish the candidates.
I thank the Justices for steadfastly following the law without concern for incoming MAGA nonsense (funded by Jim Banks or other furtive quislings). Perhaps they will brand Ms. Copenhaver a LOSER and move on -- there is no honor among thieves -- but that is not an option one finds in the Roy Cohn playbook they are using.
This blazing liberal will now be voting for Mr. Deery in the general. While I do not agree with him on much, I recognize he is a fellow American interested in fundamental American values beyond the second Amendment. Perhaps he will represent his district better this next term, and remember people like me who got him there. For now, he has checked the all-important integrity box.
Well, let's not get carried away here. Mr. Integrity is still a guy who supported and helped elect the world's most obviously corrupt man for a second term as president. He votes for the large majority of bad Republican Party bills in this state, and will continue to do so in the next four years. Whatever is the next step in handing public money to unaccountable private religious schools, he's a likely vote in favor. I for one would not want to look a trans adolescent in the eye and tell them I voted to re-elect a guy who voted to deny them treatment.
Yes, he showed integrity on one bill, and yes, David Sanders is unlikely to win anyway. But this state needs an end to the supermajority, not crossover votes to perpetuate it.
I agree that supermajorities are bad. Mr. Sanders sits in a 9-0 superdupermajority that failed to even slow down SK hynix when public opinion loudly demanded it. If he cannot lead on that, and given a long history of tactical faceplants, he would be just a fart in a tornado at the state house.
What do I want? Rahm Emanuel in full combat mode. He is also not great on trans issues. Just like Barack Obama used to be bad on same-sex marriage. You first and foremost have to fight and win. I think we are in agreement it will not happen anytime soon in Indiana.
Something will follow MAGA. Will it be worse? I can say with certainty that Marco Rubio, Tucker Carlson, Thomas Massie, and the vice president are all smarter than Orange Julius Carsar. We have to hope that someone smart (YO MITCH) will find a way to rebuild a loyal and principled opposition to liberals like me. Let's argue, strongly, without demonizing. I think the odds are that someone who has been through what Mr. Deery has just been through will be more resilient.
Also: I voted for Deery in the primary so I need to be able to testify truthfully that I voted for a Republican in the general if these fascist LARPers ever figure out who I am and subpoena me.
Other than that, I think you and I might be turning in identical ballots.
I am not sure that hinting at "a long history of faceplants" adds much to one's arguments for opposing a particular candidate. Since, however, you have revealed --without apparent coercion--that you, indeed, voted for Deery in the Primary, I suppose "gentleman's honor" if there is such a thing, requires--or rather mandates that you fulfill your electoral promise and maintain your integrity by voting for the winner of the recent Indiana Supreme Court decision. p.s. I still enjoy your posts.
PQ, I have commented on the integrity issue above, but I would like to emphasize there are so many other matters--support for women's health, support for families besides those that have a married father and mother, support for Medicaid recipients, support for public schools, etc. Although it has taken time, I was finally able to persuade my fellow Councilors to deny a corporation tax abatements, because it was not going to fulfill its obligations. The majority of my fellow Councilors did not agree with me in my opposition to the SK Hynix rezoning, but I was able to lead successfully the Stop the Water Steal movement that I founded. I can only hope that people will not be so narrowly focused on one vote that does not distinguish Deery from the other candidates still in the race as you appear to be.
I fear that this isn’t the end of this story. Trump is likely to push for this to be escalated to the US Supreme Court, placing this area in a national spotlight. To their credit, the current court seems to be leaning toward state rights on elections as demonstrated in the Missouri case earlier today. I can’t imagine they will rock the boat too much for this fairly insignificant state rep race.
Copenhaver's god-king is getting high on his own ego-induced supply at his Dallas Trumpapalooza.
Once he comes close to actuality in the unreality of Printer-GalPal's info feed, he'll push for his bought and paid-for SCOTUS to make the patriotic decision.
At long last. Thank you Dave for your coverage on this saga, I've been able to follow it closely even though I'm not in the Lafayette area myself anymore

Hooray for democracy! Votes count.

Ironically, Sanders would have been better off if Paula had won.

I agree. Deery checked the integrity box. Banks isn’t aware of the word, integrity.
Thanks, Dave! Fascinating oral arguments. Quick turn around. I need to read what they wrote when it comes out. I'm sure it'll be short.
How many bills does everyone think the General Assembly will file related to this area of Indiana Code?
Now the District 23 campaign season can hit the next phase!

YES! This just made my day!
So does this mean these articles will stop polluting my newsfeed now? Dave, you deserve a nice little break from reporting.

If Copenhaver's god-king wasn't getting high on his own ego-induced supply of his Dallas Trumpapalooza.
He won't be flailing about taking "this injustice" to his bought and paid for SCOTUS.
