I definitely remember there being a “sick out” day in the fall semester when many LSC drivers did not come to work. I believe teachers got a raise for 2022-23 but I don’t believe the bus drivers got anything! I would be upset too. Absolutely crazy that LSC would rather make so many families send their teens out to wait in the dark of winter for the bus than to just pay their drivers more and see if that solution doesn’t help first.

If conventional economic theory is correct, there should be a market clearing price for any commodity, including labor. Which means that maybe, for once, Chuckles Hockema is right about something: Paying school bus drivers more should, in theory, relieve the shortage of school bus drivers. The idea that pay raises wouldn't help because LSC's hourly rates are "competitive with other districts" is pretty silly if other districts are experiencing similar shortages.

I'm not good at math, or cost/benefit analysis, but surely the cost of raising bus driver salaries to a level high enough to attract 12 more bus drivers has got to be less than the cost of disrupting the daily schedules of thousands or students, teachers, staff and parents. Just a hunch.
